Why remove image metadata?
Protect your location
Smartphone photos contain GPS coordinates that reveal exactly where you were. Remove this data to prevent location tracking.
Hide device information
EXIF reveals camera model, phone type, and software. Stripping metadata prevents others from identifying your devices.
Remove AI provenance
ChatGPT images and Adobe Firefly carry C2PA Content Credentials. The strip removes them too; the AI label guide covers what that changes on Instagram or TikTok.
What metadata gets removed?
With All metadata selected, the remover clears all embedded metadata ExifTool can strip: EXIF (camera settings, GPS, timestamps), IPTC (copyright, captions, keywords), XMP (extended properties, licensing), and C2PA content provenance. Orientation and the color profile stay unless you untick the option.
After a full strip, the download carries no hidden information about where, when or by whom the photo was taken. Visual quality is preserved.
This matters on forums, marketplaces, dating apps, or any public platform where location or device information is a risk. Format-specific caveat: PNG often has little EXIF; JPEG from a phone is the typical high-risk file.
To keep copyright and camera settings but drop where the photo was taken, choose Location only. To drop only what an AI label is based on, choose AI markers only; the EXIF reader shows which of those markers a file carries.
Delete EXIF data online: orientation and color profile
A plain exiftool -all= removes the Orientation tag too. Phones often store the pixels sideways and rely on that tag to display the photo upright, so a file stripped of it can open rotated by 90 degrees. The remover keeps Orientation by default for that reason.
The ICC color profile is the other one. On sRGB photos nothing changes. On iPhone photos shot in Display P3, colors look slightly duller without it in color-managed apps. It is kept by default too. Untick "Keep orientation and color profile" for a strict wipe: the profile can name the device brand. The guide to removing metadata has the ExifTool commands for both cases.
